MODBURY, England, April 28 (UPI) -- The small British town of Modbury is set to become the first community in Europe to ban the ubiquitous plastic grocery bag.

The 43 merchants in the West Country coastal town have agreed to send their customers off with purchases wrapped in paper placed in cloth sacks as a statement against the bags that have become a major source of litter.

The self-imposed ban is set to take effect Monday.

The move was prompted by Modbury native Rebecca Hoskins, a wildlife photographer who filmed a BBC documentary on plastic pollution of the Pacific Ocean. She told The Guardian Saturday the situation moved her to the point that she set out to convince her old hometown to take action.

Local shopkeepers ordered 2,000 cloth "Modbury bags," which could become collectors' items, the newspaper said.
