LOS ANGELES, April 26 (UPI) -- The Lake Balboa neighborhood in Los Angeles has had quite a reality check; residents just found out that they do not really live in Lake Balboa.

Homeowners in the community, which is near the center of the San Fernando Valley, learned that "Lake Balboa" doesn't exist, the Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

Even though there are blue signs designating that name for the area, it turned out that the real Lake Balboa is part of Encino, Calif.

The mix-up was discovered when residents from Van Nuys, which is an adjoining residential area, wanted to change their community's name from Van Nuys to Lake Balboa.

During the process, it was found that city leaders never officially authorized the name change, the Times report stated. Instead, City Councilman Dennis Zine had workers post the blue community signs as a courtesy to residents in 2002.

"There is no Lake Balboa, " said Councilman Richard Alarcon at a community meeting.

He also warned that those using a Lake Balboa address when selling their home could risk fraud charges, the Times said.
