CHICAGO, April 26 (UPI) -- Veterinarians at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo animal hospital performed surgery on a 300-pound Andean bear to remove a cancerous growth from his right eyelid.

The bear, Goliath, was operated on Wednesday to remove the thumbnail-sized fibrous mass, the Chicago Tribune reported Thursday.

"It grew from the time they found it, so it's really good that they're removing it now," said Robyn Barbiers, vice president for collections at the zoo.

Dr. Kathryn Gamble, the zoo's director of veterinary medicine, said the growth was on the animal's third eyelid, which moves horizontally and "acts like a windshield wiper."

"I think we got the whole thing out," said ophthalmologist Dr. Jeff Mono, who performed the surgery alongside Barbiers but whose patients are usually human. "It's like a little walnut."

"I think it went beautifully," Mono said of the procedure.

However, the surgical team said further tests are necessary to assess whether the surgery was a complete success.
