LONDON, April 25 (UPI) -- Nearly half of current British millionaires are women for the first time in history, thanks to their career exploits or success in the divorce courts.

A report from the Datamonitor research company said 46 percent of Britain's 376,000 millionaires are of the female persuasion and if current trends hold true their gender will soon truly represent "the richer sex," The Daily Mail said Wednesday.

The study found that with women becoming more successful as entrepreneurs in various British industries, women are becoming increasingly successful in the financial world.

Women in Britain have also benefited recently from very lucrative divorce settlements, the study found.

Among such highly profitable ends to British marriages are Karen Parlour's divorce from former England soccer star Ray Parlour, that netted her millions of dollars and one-third of his future earnings.

Multi-millionaire Emma Harrison told the newspaper the key to continuing women's upward trend is promoting self-confidence.

"Women must stop asking permission," the training agency entrepreneur said. "We need to give them the confidence to go out and get on with it."
