Chicago zoo boasts new polar bear cub

CHICAGO, April 22 (UPI) -- Chicago Zoological Society officials say they hope the magic that made the Berlin Zoo's Knut an international star will rub off on their own polar bear cub.

The 4-month-old male was introduced to the public Friday. The cub, which has not yet been named, has been living in a maternity den with his mother, Arki.

"I think ours is cuter than Knut," Brookfield Zoo spokeswoman Sondra Katzen told The Chicago Sun-Times.

The cub is a little grimy because his den is full of hay and "natural soils" -- or polar bear poop. But Katzen expects him to clean up nicely once he takes his first swim.

Christy Mazrimas-Ott, the zoo's senior keeper, said the pool in the polar bear exhibit, which has been drained, will be partially filled soon so Arki can start giving the cub swimming lessons.

Aussie, the cub's father, is housed separately. In the wild, male polar bears sometimes regard cubs as food.
