IOWA CITY, Iowa, April 18 (UPI) -- The University of Iowa's College Republican chapter has canceled its annual illegal immigrant game featuring players trying to cross an imaginary border.

The Des Moines (Iowa) Register said Wednesday that the annual event scheduled for Thursday at the Iowa City campus was canceled amidst protests by both Latino and immigration groups.

The event typically featured two teams of students, with half representing illegal immigrants and the other the U.S. Border Patrol.

The two teams then compete in an effort to cross a hypothetical U.S.-Mexico border.

The unusual event was to be part of the College Republican chapter's Coming Out Week.

The week-long celebration also will include a Support Our Troops Barbeque and an honorary event oriented around the accomplishments of former U.S. President Ronald Reagan.

The newspaper said the group has replaced the immigrant game with a congressman's speech.
