ORAIOKASTRO, Greece, April 17 (UPI) -- A man who allegedly assaulted the mayor of the Greek village of Oraiokastro says he did so because of the town's failure to repair a pot hole.

The man, who was not identified, went to the home of Mayor Nikolaos Batos and punched him in the face and body when he answered the door, Ekathimerini reported Tuesday.

The alleged attacker said he was angry that municipal workers would not fill a pothole in front of his home. He was arrested and charged with causing bodily harm, making threats, swearing and disturbing the peace.

The mayor was treated for bruises at a local hospital. Doctors said his injuries were not serious.

Loud store music annoys neighbors

EDINBURGH, Scotland, April 17 (UPI) -- Neighbors of Edinburgh, Scotland, stores that play loud bagpipe music are encouraging shoppers to boycott the establishments.

The stores, part of the Royal Mile in the city's Canongate neighborhood, often blast loud bagpipe and other traditional Scottish music into the streets with outdoor speakers, The Scotsman reported Tuesday.

Shop owners say the music is a key component of promoting their products, but those who live nearby say the music is far too loud.

"If I hear Highland Cathedral one more time I think I'll scream," said Canongate resident Marie Hamilton.

Anonymous notes have appeared in the neighborhood, asking residents to boycott the noise-making shops.

"This music is really annoying for residents in the area who have to listen to the constant whine all day, everyday, even Sundays," the signs read.

"Many residents are not able to open their windows because of this nuisance," she said.

Accused shoplifter uses bad bowel defense

CAPE CORAL, Fla., April 17 (UPI) -- Irritable bowel syndrome was the defense a 61-year-old woman used when police in Cape Coral, Fla., police arrested her for shoplifting from a busy supermarket.

An employee of a Publix supermarket called police after seeing Helen Gallo leave for her car after allegedly dropping items into a shopping bag Sunday, the Cape Coral Daily Breeze reported Tuesday.

The store manager detained Gallo, who told police because of her irritable bowel syndrome she couldn't risk standing in line at the check-out.

The International Foundation for Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders' aboutibs.org Web site says the syndrome can cause cramping and diarrhea with frequent washroom visits or bloating and constipation.
