Liberty lost and found by Coast Guard

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla., April 17 (UPI) -- The mascot of a U.S. Coast Guard station in Florida was found Tuesday morning after spending almost two days locked in a box of emergency flares.

The black Labrador, named Liberty, appeared to be in good shape after her ordeal, WKMG-TV in Orlando, Fla., reported.

Mike Lynch, the officer of the day, said he found Liberty as he made his morning rounds at the Port Canaveral Coast Guard Station.

"Mike opened the door and she just looked at him like, 'Hey, you gonna let me out now?'" Chief John Rice said. "She stretched legs and took off for the main building."

Rice believes that Liberty accompanied the last person to check the steel container of pyrotechnics on Sunday afternoon and jumped in to get out of the rain. The base was searched after it was determine Liberty couldn't be found.
