Teen pair racks up $1,469 phone bill

CLEVELAND, April 9 (UPI) -- A mother in Cleveland found out that buying her two teenage daughters cell phones on a family plan was not the best idea, when she got a bill for $1,469.

Christine Mattlin told Cleveland's WEWS-TV that when she got the bill, she was shocked to see that her two daughters had definitely taken advantage of their new toys.

"t almost gave me a heart attack when I opened it because it was over $1,400 for one month," she said.

A close look at the bill showed the teenagers racked up most of the charges by using their phones' Internet access. The teens were unaware that sharing photos through their phones was not included in the family plan, and Mattlin said she learned her lesson pretty quickly.

The TV station said the phone service provider has agreed to halve Mattlin's bill, and Mattlin is petitioning to have the Internet service permanently removed from her daughters' phones.

Mets fans try out for national anthem

NEW YORK, April 9 (UPI) -- Several groups and individuals gathered at New York's Shea Stadium last week to audition for a chance to sing the national anthem at Mets games this season.

Hundreds lined up in the early morning rain while the Mets were on the road in St. Louis, The New York Times reported.

Singer-songwriter Keith Maguire, 30, had bronchitis but he showed up for the audition anyway.

"Shea obviously has two years left as the home of the Mets," said David Howard, the team's executive vice president for business operations. "We think many of our fans have often fantasized about being on that field either as a player or as a singer of the anthem."

Many of the singers had previously auditioned for the popular television show "American Idol," the newspaper said.

Thumb may be fight casualty

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, April 9 (UPI) -- Police in Jonkoping, Sweden, believe a man might have swallowed another man's thumb during a row at a nightclub.

The 23- and 24-year-old men started fighting on the dance floor at a party in the Swedish town, The Local reported.

The 23 year old bit off the older man's thumb before having his teeth knocked out, the report alleged.

Both of the brawlers were taken to the hospital, but it became apparent that the doctor could not sew the 24 year old's thumb back on because it could not be found.

Police have not been able to locate the thumb and believe it is possible that the 23-year-old may have swallowed it.

Almost $10G found under bank of slots

JEAN, Nev., April 9 (UPI) -- Workers removing slot machines from a closed Nevada casino found almost $10,000 in loose change.

The stash at the Nevada Landing has been building up for 18 years, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported. The coins weighed 675 pounds.

"There is money that has been soaking in Long Island iced teas for 18 years," said Chris McBeth, one of the supervisors.

Casino workers say most of the money was probably dropped when video poker machines were filled with coins by someone dumping them in by the bucketful.

Others may have jumped out of hoppers or been dropped by customers.

MGM Mirage, which owns the Nevada Landing in Jean, about 30 miles south of Las Vegas, must report the found money as income.
