NEW YORK, April 7 (UPI) -- A New York subway car was temporarily transformed this week by four local artists into a comfortable living room setting.

After the artists finished the makeover on Car 5929 -- changing it into something they call "No Place Like Home" -- transit officials applauded their efforts but said the changes would have to be undone to conform with standards, the New York Post reported.

"We appreciate the design ideas, but we can't have people taking that into their own hands not knowing our system safety requirements," NYC Transit spokesman Paul Fleuranges said.

The newly remodeled car was equipped with rugs, curtains, flowers and even a throw pillow.

Artist Ellen Moynihan said she had envisioned the project as being representative of the increasing amount of time New York residents spend on the subway. She told the Post part of her team's goal was to see exactly how city officials and daily subway riders would react to the cozy decor.
