BURFJORD, Norway, April 2 (UPI) -- Tons of Norwegian reindeer meat meant to be a delicacy was found to be laden with bacteria and ordered destroyed by health inspectors.

The Norwegian Food Safety Authority ordered the moldy and dirty meat destroyed after inspectors acting on a tip raided the packing plant in Burfjord in northern Norway, Aftenposten said Monday.

Authorities said they found 423 reindeer cadavers that had spent more than three weeks being shipped back and forth across Norway under varying temperatures that led to the venison thawing and lying unwrapped. The meat was so rancid it couldn't even be used for animal food.

The meat, which is often advertised as having "the best ingredients from the great outdoors," was owned by a company that in turn is owned by reindeer herders in Finnmark.

The seizure was the latest in a crackdown by food inspectors. "We've earlier inspected restaurant kitchens and freezer facilities," said Olaf Bellika, a regional director with the food safety agency. "Now the transportation and plants need to be followed up."
