SHEPTON MALLET, England, March 28 (UPI) -- A live Internet camera of a unique cheddar cheese maturing in southwestern England will get some real action Thursday when a core of the cheese is sampled.

Cheesemaker Tom Calver will liven up the broadcast when he takes a small core of the 44-pound truckle of West Country Farmhouse Cheddar to ensure it's maturing properly, the BBC reported Wednesday.

Project organizer Dom Lane said he's amazed that since the cheese went live online in January, the site has had more than 460,000 hits, and he expects about 55,000 people will be on hand to watch the sampling, which is at 10 a.m. local time, or 5 a.m. EDT.

The cheese takes 12 months to mature, and Calver said it should develop into the color of an "old gravestone" before being auctioned off for charity.

West Country Farmhouse Cheddar carries the Protected Designation of Origin status along with such products as Champagne, Parma Ham and Cognac.
