NEW DELHI, March 27 (UPI) -- A man in India reportedly has been serving as a bonded laborer for some 27 years to repay a loan of about 82 pounds of rice.

Authorities in the eastern state of Bihar, claiming it was a rare case, as bonded labor has been outlawed since 1976, told the BBC the landlord would be prosecuted. But the Anti-Slavery International said such cases are still widespread in India.

The man identified as Jawahar Manjhi, who lives in a village with his wife and four sons, reportedly took the rice loan for a family wedding from a landowner 27 years ago. As a collateral, it was reportedly agreed Manjhi would work in the creditor's field.

However, in the interim, Manjhi had to take more loans of rice and does not know how much he has paid back, the report said.
