NEW YORK, March 7 (UPI) -- A survey by the College Board in New York and the Art & Science Group in Baltimore suggests students prefer parents to be involved in college planning.

The online survey of high school seniors, which aimed to assess student's opinions of "helicopter parents" -- named as such because of their tendency to "hover" over their children's lives -- found that 95 percent of the students' parents are either "involved" or "very involved" in their children's college planning process and 60 percent of students said they are satisfied with their parents' level of involvement.

A total of 28 percent said they wanted more involvement from their parents and 6 percent wanted their parents to be less involved.

"It's important for us to keep in mind the important and positive role that parents do play in helping students make the transition to college," said Brad Quin, senior director of Higher Education Advocacy and Special Initiatives for the College Board.

The survey of 1,700 students was conducted for studentPOLL, a new publication jointly published by the College Board and the Art & Science Group.
