British churches clear the air on smoking

LONDON, March 4 (UPI) -- British religious leaders are criticizing a government plan to post no smoking signs in churches, calling the effort costly and unnecessary.

Speaking on behalf of Church House, which governs more than 16,000 British churches, a spokesman told The Daily Mail churchgoers already know better than to smoke in church.

"We don't see that there is a problem of smoking in churches," he said. "It's not part of the culture to smoke in them."

The proposal comes as Britain attempts to enforce its new smoking ban on all enclosed public places.

Rev. Neil Fairlamb echoed the sentiments of Church House, while finding some humor in the no smoking campaign.

"The cost must be huge," he told the paper. "God has a sense of humor, though, because the literature was sent on Feb. 21 -- Ash Wednesday."
