Brits keep 'racy' out of horse racing

LONDON, March 3 (UPI) -- British horse-racing officials routinely scrutinize the list of names given to horses to remove monikers deemed offensive, overly silly or even "racy."

A panel of reviewers at the administration firm Weatherby's combs through some 15,000 names per year looking for hidden meaning, slang and double entendres that simply won't do. Welsh-language names are also carefully checked.

Along with preserving some dignity for racing, the censorship also appears to have an effect on the betting action. Weatherby's CEO Nick Craven told The Telegraph that novice bettors often put a few pounds down on a horse with a funny name.
