NEW YORK, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- A New York City Council committee has voted to implement a citywide symbolic ban of the racial slur known as the "n" word.

"We're not looking to punish people, what we're trying to do is stimulate talk," said Councilman Leroy Comrie, the main backer of the proposal, after the city's civil rights subcommittee voted unanimously to approve it, New York Newsday reported.

The full City Council is expected to approve the measure Wednesday.

Several bans like the one passed in New York have been implemented recently throughout the country.

The lawmakers helping to implement the bans said they are disturbed by the casual use of the "n" word by young people, who cite its frequent use in music and movies as an excuse to use it themselves.

"Here we are today having overcome so much and we find our children referring to each other colloquially by the worst possible word," said Queens Borough President Helen Marshall, who addressed the panel in support of the resolution.
