Lesbianism common in captive koalas

QUEENSLAND, Australia, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Captive female koalas in Australia have been observed engaging in homosexual acts, with some sessions involving as many as five koalas.

The Independent on Sunday reported that despite the presence of males, the female koalas apparently preferred each other. Researchers said the behavior has only been observed in captive koalas; wild koalas remain heterosexual.

Scientists who were monitoring the koalas with digital cameras said there were three times as many homosexual encounters than heterosexual ones.

Scientists from the University of Queensland studied 130 koalas in captivity. They will publish their results in the journal Applied Animal Behavior Science.
