Rats make themselves at home in restaurant

NEW YORK, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Rats running around after closing in a fast food restaurant provided late-night entertainment in New York's Greenwich Village.

The rodent invasion, caught on videotape by TV news cameras, was another embarrassment for KFC/Taco Bell after last year's E. coli outbreak. A spokesman for the New York Health Department said that the restaurant must be inspected before it can reopen, WABC-TV, New York, reported Friday.

Ironically, the rats may have been stirred up by construction undertaken by the owner of the franchise to cut down on rodent problems. Rick Maynard, a spokesman for KFC/Taco Bell, called rodent infestation "unacceptable."

"We've talked with the franchisee who is actively addressing this issue as is evident by the preventative construction in the basement yesterday that temporarily escalated the situation," he said in a statement. "This store will remain closed until this issue is completely resolved."

New York is home to millions of rats, although most spend their lives unseen by the city's human residents.
