JERUSALEM, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- The Israeli Defense minister revealed initiatives designed to improve his public image after he was photographed looking through capped binoculars.

Defense Minister Amir Peretz, who recent polls have found to be unpopular with the majority of the populace, lost more ground with the public when he was photographed looking through binoculars that were blocked by lens caps while listening to Israeli Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gabi Ashkenazi explain what he was looking at, IsraelNN.com reported Friday.

Peretz reportedly looked through the binoculars several times without removing the caps.

As part of his campaign to improve his public image and his standing within the Labor party, the Defense minister announced plans to force Jewish satellite communities to abandon outposts considered to be illegal by the Israeli government.

"He has been saying that illegal outposts must be evacuated for a long time but now is the time to implement it," an aide to Peretz said. "We cannot continue stalling. He is ready to do this even at the cost of a conflict with the prime minister."
