CAPE GIRADEAU, Mo., Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Across countless U.S. cities like Cape Giradeau, Mo., people have stocked up on simple foods for the second-biggest day in eating: Super Bowl Sunday.

The Southeast Missourian said many Cape Giradeau residents spent Saturday shopping for foods such as chips, soda and cookies in preparation for the big game.

Super Bowl Sunday is typically seen as only behind Thanksgiving when it comes to the consumption of food in the United States, the newspaper noted.

"Typically the eating goes on from pregame at 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. when it's over," area supermarket manager Dennis Marchi said.

But unlike a Thanksgiving meal that takes hours of preparation, most people go for quick and easy finger foods for Super Bowl Sunday.

"Big sellers include little wieners, sausage trays, chips and beer," Marchi said.
