EUGENE, Ore., Jan. 8 (UPI) -- University of Oregon student Luke Vaughn recently returned home after enjoying a one-month, 10,743-mile roundtrip journey to New York as a human baton.

The 22-year-old originally sought a ride to California, but after more than 300 strangers on the Internet offered him rides, Vaughn found himself passing from vehicle to vehicle to travel through 30 U.S. states in nearly as many days, the Oregonian said.

Through the generosity of others, Vaughn managed to travel across most of the United States on a measly budget of $150.

"I spent less than I would have spent not going on a trip," Vaughn said of his unusual vacation.

Vaughn said he got the idea for the quirky travel plan from New York online performance artist Ze Frank, who recommended the student continue his travels after visiting his mother in California.

Vaughn detailed how several of his chauffeurs elevated his blood pressure by speeding along on U.S. highways, but he credits many strangers for offering him the pleasure of their personal stories, the paper said.
