LONDON, Jan. 5 (UPI) -- A British insurance company's survey indicates bargain-hunters spend millions of pounds during post-Christmas sales on clothes that remain in the closet.

Churchill Home Insurance reported 43 percent of men bought at least two articles of clothing they never wore, while 54 percent of women bought a single piece of clothing that remains unworn. The men waste an average of 25 pounds ($48), while for women it's a more modest 15 pounds ($29).

Overall, shoppers are expected to waste 580 million pounds ($1.12 billion) this January.

"The January sales tend to cause a rush of blood to the head," psychotherapist Christine Webber told the Western Daily Mail. "And when that happens we seem to be immune to our normal patterns of rational thinking."

Women are most likely to waste money on blouses, skirts, slacks, coats and sweaters. For men, the items most likely to be unworn after purchase are shirts and T-shirts, sweaters, shoes, coats and underwear.

The survey was done online with 2,652 people responding.
