KANSAS CITY, Mo., May 20 (UPI) -- A Kansas City, Mo., man tried to smoke out a raccoon family from his attic -- and ended up with a fire that caused $25,000 in damages.
C.W. Roseburr, 72, tried a technique he'd once used on rabbits, the Kansas City Star reports. Roseburr first poked around with a stick. Then he lit a rag, stuck it on the end of the stick and poked again.
When the raccoon came out, its fur was on fire, sparking a blaze, the newspaper said.
Firefighters responded, putting out the fire. They also found two baby raccoons, unharmed. But no adult raccoon.
Rosburr said insurance will probably cover the damages. His wife and he are staying at a hotel until the house is repaired.
A spokesman for the Missouri Department of Conservation said raccoons and squirrels frequently go inside homes this time of year. He recommended getting professional help to evict them.
