LONDON, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- The British Gas Co.says gas consumption rises about 15 percent during the Christmas holiday, likely due to the cooking of turkeys.

Consumers reportedly spend 3.5 million pounds ($4.59 million) using the stove, Sky News reports.

If every turkey bought in Britain in December, roughly 10 million, were overcooked by two hours it would waste more than a million pounds in household energy, British Gas said.

The company also said consumers usually cook a turkey for an average five hours.

"Our research shows that energy wastage is at an all-time high during this period," spokesman Alan McLaughlin said.

"We are urging consumers to make simple behavioral changes at home."

The company suggests testing doneness by inserting a skewer into the thickest part of the thigh. If the juices run clear, the bird is cooked.
