Wool coats for bronze pigeons come and go

EDINBURGH, Scotland, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- A Good Samaritan outfitted four bronze pigeons in an Edinburgh, Scotland, neighborhood with little wool coats to shield them from the cold.

But the coats outfitting the pigeons at the top of Leith Walk in the city's historic port district quickly disappeared, The Scotsman reported. No one is sure if they were removed by the person who supplied them in the first place, possibly for some other needy statuary, or stolen by someone who wanted coats for garden gnomes.

"I think the coats should be brought back," said Denise Davidson, who works at nearby Dofos Pet Center. "We don't have any Christmas decorations down here so this was good to have. It's really nice when someone makes an effort to do something for other people's benefit."

The coats, made out of a white blanket, had plastic ties to ensure they would not blow away.

The pigeons, designed by sculptor Shona Kinloch, have been vandalized in the decade they have been on Leith Walk and even hit by a car. This year was the first that anyone appeared concerned with their welfare.
