HARRINGTON PARK, N.J., Dec. 9 (UPI) -- The principal of a New Jersey school paid off his students for reading 10,000 books in a year by spending a freezing night on the roof.
The New York Daily News reported Saturday that school Principal Scott Davies survived the frigid night on the roof of the Harrington Park School after losing the wager with the students who rushed through the books in about four months.
Davies, 40, an obvious good sport, had a tent, a sleeping bag, thermal underwear and a flask of hot chocolate up on the roof with him when he hunkered down for a bitter cold winter's night after school Thursday. There were snow flurries and icy winds as the temperatures in Bergen County plummeted down to the low 20s, the News reported.
Davies told the News: "It was cold, but I survived it. The night actually passed pretty quickly. The students and their families kept coming by to wish me well up until midnight, and then again from 5 a.m. That helped me get through it."
The principal, fresh from a previous teaching job in Montana, added that he managed to get about three hours' sleep.
