The editorial department of Jiyukokuminsha -- the publisher that oversees the reference book "Gendai Yogo no Kiso Chishiki" ("Basic Knowledge of Contemporary Words") -- co-sponsored the competition with U-Can Inc. Advertisement Hinkaku (dignity) comes from mathematician Masahiko Fujiwara's best-seller "Kokka no Hinkaku" ("The Dignity of a State"). Kakusa shakai means class-structured society, and ero kakkoii means erotic cool. Other trendy new phrases and words include no tore (training the brain) and mixi (a social networking Web site).
