LONDON, Dec. 2 (UPI) -- The clock struck 7:18 p.m. at London's Paddington Station this week and sent some 3,500 assembled "flashmob" fans into a dancing frenzy.

Thursday night's event proved the "flashmob" fad -- in which respondents are tipped via the Internet to show up at a certain place at a certain time -- isn't dead yet.

The BBC said the event might have been the biggest in flashmobbing's brief history and resulted in thousands of people dancing frantically to music played over their personal MP3 players.

"It was the most bizarre and surreal experience of my life," bemused commuter Danny Clifford told the BBC. "The clock hit 7.18pm and suddenly the place erupted. Everyone was plugged into their MP3 players so there was no music to be heard."

The song of the day, the BBC said, was the club tune "What You Do."
