The new ordinance -- part of a crackdown on rabies -- limits dog ownership to one non-aggressive canine whose shoulder height is less than 14 inches, the Shanghai Daily reports. Although no Beijing residents have contracted rabies, nine people who contracted rabies in other parts of the country were brought to Beijing for treatment in local hospitals before they died, the newspaper says. Beijing reported having 550,000 registered dogs this year, 90,000 more than last year, the city's public security bureau said.
