SULLIVAN ISLAND, S.C., Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Even governors need a voter registration card -- and South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford found that out the hard way Tuesday.

Sanford was turned away from the polling place at Sullivan Island Elementary School by the poll manager when he couldn't produce the registration card.

First lady Jenny Sanford was heard chiding the governor that she had reminded him to bring the document, CNN reported.

Sanford praised poll workers for their vigilance. He returned with the voter card a short time later and was allowed to cast his ballot.

The Republican Sanford is expected to prevail in his race against Democrat challenger Tommy Moore.
