WASHINGTON, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- A study by Washington pollsters and political advisers has suggested that Republicans are more likely than Democrats to drink Dr. Pepper soft drinks.
The study, "Applebee's America: How Successful Political, Business and Religious Leaders Connect With the New American Community," was authored by Bush pollster Matthew Dowd, Democratic strategist Doug Sosnik and reporter Ron Fournier, ABC News reported Monday.
The report found Democrats were more likely to drink Sprite, watch Pro Wrestling, read TV Guide, watch U.S. Open tennis and eat organic foods, while Republicans are more likely to drink Dr. Pepper, enjoy monster truck shows, drink Coors beer, drive Audi cars and shop at Wal-Mart.
Dowd said the researchers used a process called "microtargeting" to reach their conclusions.
"There is something about a product choice that tells people a sense of who they are," he said.
The researchers said politicians buy data from consumer databanks that compile data from Web surfers who browse and purchase products online. They said the politicians then use that data along with local polls to specifically target their messages.
