NEW YORK, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- New York City has been selling closed firehouses for use as area theaters, TV studios and condominiums.

Many closed firehouses throughout New York have seen a transformation over the years into a diverse amount of businesses, and the city's upcoming sale of additional locales promises to do the same, the New York Daily News reported.

Among those former firehouses that have new focuses is the station that sits at 160 Chambers St., which once brought in prospective firefighters and now brings in wine connoisseurs as Chambers Street Wines.

While many of those who purchase the former fire-fighting locales told of significant costs to renovate the properties, they all detail the buildings' charm and natural history.

"When we came here in 2000 there was nothing," Faison Firehouse Theater director Tad Schnigg said.

"There was nothing left of the original fittings," he added to the paper. "But we are very proud of the building's history. It gives it a lot of character"
