NEW YORK, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Parents have a beef with New York State's writing exam that asks fourth-graders to psychoanalyze the behavior of "Brownie the Cow."
The parents of a Brooklyn student say thousands of New York City 9-year-olds could be rejected by the magnet schools of their choice if they fail the question -- and want officials to set aside the results.
Eve Gartner and Joe Morris challenged New York City Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein to take the exam himself.
"We have asked several friends to take the 'Brownie the Cow Challenge,'" they wrote. "So far, none of our adult friends seem ready to advance to the fifth grade."
A Klein spokesman refused to comment to the New York Times, but a state department of education spokesman said the question passed a field test before being added to the exam.
"We field-tested on fourth graders, too," Morris told the newspaper, "and got universal bewilderment."
