DELL CITY, Texas, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- A stretch of Interstate 10 in West Texas may have the highest U.S. speed limit at 80 mph, but many in the region say the speed will come at a price.

The speed limit along the 521-mile-long stretch of highway increased from 75 to 80 mph in May, but some Texas residents said the state's decision could ultimately cause accidents and deaths, The New York Times reported Sunday.

"What's next? 85?" said Hudspeth County judge Becky Dean-Walker, who has openly called the limit "too dangerous."

"We're a poor county," she continued. "We can't keep enough volunteers. Every time they jack up the speed limit it puts a terrible strain on rural counties. Five miles an hour makes a difference every time in accidents."

Yet not all along the Texas interstate are displeased with the change and have said it follows with Texas' larger than life attitude.

"You can now get places in a more legal fashion," Fort Hancock native Mike Mossman told the Times. "In Texas, we measure distances by hours rather than miles."
