ATLANTA, Oct. 12 (UPI) -- The new giant panda cub at the Atlanta zoo, now 36 days old, has opened her eyes, the zoo said Thursday.

The discovery came during a physical checkup, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. Zoo Atlanta veterinarians also determined the cub is now a bit over 16 inches long and added almost a pound in weight in the past week, going from 2.9 pounds to 3.8 pounds.

Dr. Maria Crane, who performed the 7-minute physical, described the infant female as "a very solid cub." She said that the mother, Lun Lun, appears to be doing a great job.

The cub is "probably able to see now," Crane said. "We noticed she's paying more attention to her environment."

One thing the new cub won't get for another two weeks is a name.
