OLD WESTBURY, N.Y., Sept. 16 (UPI) -- After a 40-year estrangement, a one-time Indian child bride is suing for divorce from a Long Island surgeon who claims he was never married to her.

Rukinamma Madireddy, 66, who lives in Michigan, claims she was wed to Dr. Subba Reddy Madireddy of Old Westbury, L.I., the New York Post reported.

The 70-year-old doctor denies the claim and said he had only pretended to have been married to her because they had four children together and he wanted to protect her social status out of chivalry.

Furthering her claim in Nassau Supreme Court, she has apparently produced more than two-dozen affidavits from guests of the Hindu wedding that allegedly occurred "in or around 1955." The guest list includes members of the reluctant groom's own family, village elders and even the priest who reportedly presided over the ceremony, the Post said.

The woman, who lives on a $360 a month Social Security benefit, says Madireddy stopped supporting her and their children some 30 years ago.
