CHICAGO, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- A Chicago-area woman deliberately rode home on an Amtrak train for 23 hours with her dead father because she couldn't afford to ship his body from Colorado.

Chicago Police spokeswoman Jo Ann Taylor said the unidentified woman and her cancer-stricken 80-year-old father were aboard the eastbound Amtrak Zephyr bound for Chicago from San Francisco on Sunday when the woman realized her father had died.

Afraid if she reported the death at stop in Colorado, his body would be removed from the train and be shipped home later at her expense, she said nothing about it until the train arrived at Union Station Monday night, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

An autopsy Tuesday confirmed the man died of natural causes and complications from lung and brain cancer, the report said.

Police were unsure why they took the trip, but a neighbor of the man, who asked not to be named, said the ailing father had talked of taking "one last train ride."
