Littering in Britain produces more rats

LONDON, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- A stuntwoman in London covered herself with 50 hungry rats Friday to draw attention to a campaign encouraging Britons to stop littering.

The group Keep Britain Tidy said littering has caused the population of rats to increase to more than 60 million or one for every person in the United Kingdom, Sky News reports.

To call attention to the problem, a woman dressed in a Keep Britain Tidy T-shirt and hot pants crawled into a box in Westminster accompanied by layers of food that attracted the rodents.

"People think it's only boozed-up revelers chucking their chips and burgers after a heavy night out that is causing rates to come out of their sewers and roam the streets," says Alan Woods, chief executive of Keep Britain Tidy. "Others are also doing their bit to scruffy out streets by dropping their fruit peelings and left-over lunches."
