LONDON, Aug. 25 (UPI) -- Judy the British homing pigeon that vanished on a flight home has turned up -- 5,000 miles off course in the Caribbean.
John Stewart entered Judy and three other birds in a 596-mile race last month from Bourges, France, to his home at Hadston, Northumberland. It was, as Stewart put it, "only a short hop across the Channel."
But, that short hop turned into a giant leap all the way to the Caribbean island of St. Eustatius in the Netherlands Antilles, the Times of London said.
No one's sure what happened but Judy was in good shape when a British couple found the bird and identified it through its leg ring.
Judy's owner thinks the bird probably hitched a ride on a ship.
"She's a grand little flyer," he told the Times, "but, 5,000 miles is a heck of a long way for a little pigeon."
