CHICAGO, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- A new kind of vending machine is increasingly popping up around the United States in which consumers have the option of using a credit card or debit card.

The Chicago Tribune reported on the rising prevalence of soda and snack vending machines that take plastic. MasterCard and a Coca-Cola bottling company have finished rolling out 1,000 vending machines in the Philadelphia area that accept debit and credit cards as well as cash.

Although enabling consumers to make small purchases is a trend among credit card companies, health advocates are not applauding it.

Some reportedly believe the trend only makes it easier for consumers to eat unhealthy, fatty foods, contributing to the obesity epidemic. Others warn it may also lead consumers to spend money they don't necessarily have.

Transactions under $2 -- like those made at vending machines and parking meters -- have been defined by Visa as "micropayments." In a recent survey, a vast majority said they would be more likely to use a vending machine that accepted plastic for such transactions.

Several cashless machines have been installed in the Chicago area, the Tribune said.
