NEWBURGH, Scotland, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- A Scottish farmer complains a crop circle that appeared in one of his wheat fields is an expensive bit of vandalism.

The circle on Matthew Wilson's farm near Newburgh in Fife was first noticed Saturday, The Scotsman reports. Wilson estimates the damage by the circle, which covers 2 acres, at 1,000 pounds ($1,900).

Local police, who appear to agree with Wilson and not with enthusiasts who say alien life forms are responsible for the circles, are investigating the incident.

Crop circles first began appearing in fields in England in the 1970s, with designs becoming more elaborate over the years. While scientists searched for natural phenomena that could have caused the circles and others suggested elves, fairies or visitors from outer space, two men came forward in 1991 and claimed responsibility for all the early circles. They said they got the idea while drinking in a pub and that copycats around the world had followed through with the prank.
