SELAH, Wash., Aug. 1 (UPI) -- A Washington state woman is desperate to find her missing pet, a land tortoise named Speedy.

The sulcata land tortoise has been Norma Lind's companion since her husband gave the animal to her for Christmas 3 1/2 years ago, the Yakima (Wash.) Herald reported. The tortoise wandered off last Wednesday after apparently knocking over a cinder block around his pen.

Lind says that Speedy got his name because he is fast by tortoise standards.

"When I saw him at the shop, he was crawling all over the other tortoises," Lind says. "He had all the energy in the world. I said, 'I'm going to name him Speedy.'"

Speedy is also smart, she said. When he is hungry he goes to his dish and to the refrigerator and knocks against a cupboard if no one responds.

She describes him as "a very loving tortoise."

Speedy weighs 34 pounds and is roughly 18 inches long and a foot wide.
