LONDON, July 24 (UPI) -- A survey of thousands of cell phone users in Britain has found that only one in five turn off their phones before having sex.

When it comes to young people, mobile phones are more important than television, says Carphone Warehouse, which released results of its Mobile Life Report Monday.

Conducted in association with the London School of Economics, the survey queried more than 16,500 people and is the first in a series of planned studies.

"We wanted to find out what impact the mobile phone has had on all aspects of our lives," Charles Dunstone, chief executive officer of The Carphone Warehouse Group plc, said.

They found that text messaging has overtaken talking as the most popular way to use mobile phones and that the majority of young women use their mobile phone to deter the unwanted advances of men.

The survey identified six types of mobile phone users which it called "Generation Mobile, Phonatics, Practical Parents, Fingers & Thumbs, Smart Connecteds and Silver Cynics."

Carphone Warehouse will publish two additional studies later this year, including a teen report and real-life experience study.
