CHICAGO, July 14 (UPI) -- Macy's announced it will employ Eli's Cheesecake Co., of Chicago to make Frango mint cheesecakes to help ease the pain of losing the Marshal Field's name.
The candy was made famous by Field's, which is being renamed Macy's Sept. 9. Federated Department Stores Chief Executive Officer Terry Lundgren announced the deal with Eli's Cheesecake Thursday at the Greater North Michigan Avenue Association's quarterly luncheon, the Chicago Tribune reported Friday.
"When I first met with Mayor Daley it took about 30 seconds for that subject (of Frangos) to come up," Lundgren said. "I said I don't know really much about it, but I'm going to figure it out. It sounds like it's important to you and therefore I'm sure it's important to the city of Chicago."
Lundgren said the first cakes are scheduled to hit Chicago's State Street Marshall Field's in August and will spread soon after to all 810 Macy's locations.
