NEWPORT, R.I., July 8 (UPI) -- A engaged couple is doggedly pursuing a waiver on the Newport, R.I., ban on canines at its beaches so their "furry family" can participate in their nuptials.

Winston -- an English bulldog -- has had his tuxedo fitted for the Sept. 22 ceremony and Daisy Mae -- a Jack Russell terrier -- has her dress as well, bride-to-be Shannon Simmons told the Providence (R.I.) Journal.

When Simons and Cameron Signs of of Groton, Conn., planned their wedding for Easton's Beach they were unaware of the city's newly revised ordinance banning dogs until October, the couple wrote in a letter to City Hall.

"We consider our dogs to be our kids," Simmons, 25, said.

The City Council is expected to pass on their request for a one-hour waiver of the ban to the city manager for a recommendation, the newspaper said.

It remains to be seen whether the law will be tamed by the couple's plea to "allow our furry family members to be part of our special day."
