LOS ANGELES, June 29 (UPI) -- A growing number of Los Angeles-area burglars are risking going into tented homes being fumigated with deadly chemicals, The Los Angeles Times reports.

Most recently, thieves targeted the home of a Times office manager, Janice Dawson, who lost photographic gear, video game equipment, jewelry and other items.

She told the newspaper she couldn't believe anyone would take such a deadly risk when her 2-story house was full of Vikane, a gas that kills termites, other pests and humans, too.

"The exterminators wouldn't even let the sheriff go in," she said. "They said it was too dangerous."

While police around Southern California said it couldn't be called a crime wave, several acknowledged it is growing in frequency, the report said.

Last summer, police found a gas mask in a stolen minivan after a suspect crashed it. Investigators learned that the vehicle had been taken from the driveway of a home being tented for termites.
