ROTWAND, Germany, June 26 (UPI) -- German wildlife officials shot and killed the first brown bear in the country since 1835, saying its well-publicized antics had made it dangerous to humans.

Dubbed "Bruno" by German media, the animal roamed throughout Bavaria for two weeks, killing sheep, chickens and ruining beehives, Deutsche Welle reported.

The government hired a team of bear trackers with dogs to tranquilize the bear, but they had no success for more than two weeks, and during the weekend, the shoot-to-kill order was issued for public safety.

Early Monday, hunters brought the bear down near the town of Rotwand, the report said.

On Friday, Roland Melisch of the World Wildlife Fund in Germany called "Bruno" "a problem bear," but the Austrian animal rights group, Four Paws denounced the shooting in a statement Monday and called for a police investigation into the "premature" shooting of the bear, the report said.
