WASHINGTON, June 12 (UPI) -- A Florida company will charge $3 per mile in its fleet of mini-jet taxis, and even less if the customer allows them to land to pick up other fares.

DayJet Corp., of Delray Beach, Fla., plans to begin flying more than 300 of the light jets when the Federal Aviation Administration certifies the Eclipse 500, which is expected in about a month. From five regional airports in Florida, DayJet plans to expand throughout seven southeastern states.

The new aircraft hold as many as four passengers, cost $1.5 million each, and fly at about 400 mph, The Washington Times reported. Traditional air taxis are turboprop aircraft that travel at 200 mph.

The manufacturer is Eclipse Aviation, of Albuquerque, which has a backlog of 2,500 orders. The aircraft weigh about as much as a sport utility vehicle and will be used mostly on flights of less than 500 miles, the newspaper said.
