Chicago's outdoor cafes may go to the dogs

CHICAGO, June 12 (UPI) -- Chicago's city council is preparing to vote on whether dogs should be allowed to dine and lounge alongside their owners at outdoor cafes.

Already in Alexandria, Va., cafe owners offer biscuits to dogs at their owners' feet, but Illinois, like most states, prevents all but service animals from sitting with people at indoor or outdoor restaurants, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Chef Didier Durand is anticipating the bylaw allowing dogs at cafes will pass, and has been developing a special menu for dogs, which he tested on his own 2-year-old French poodle. It includes ostrich pate, bone marrow cake and grilled ground steak.

Meanwhile, at A Taste of Heaven, a sign says "children of all ages have to behave and use their indoor voices." Owner Dan McCauley told the Times dogs are more welcome than noisy children.

"Everyone loves dogs," McCauley said. "Not everyone loves a screaming child."
